Opportunity Zone ready for Transformation

The Southeastern area of Winston-Salem, located just 2 miles from downtown, has roots in the late 1800s and early to mid-1900s. This area is one of the most accessible parts of town as it is crisscrossed by Interstate 40, US Highways 52 and 311. It is also the City’s most diverse ward. Here can be found neighborhoods founded in the early years of the 19th century, and new manufacturing plants serving the needs of the 21st, a historic African American neighborhood, and the City’s largest Hispanic population. Waughtown is a neighborhood right in the middle of this area, and right in the center is a 37-acre site that was originally the corporate headquarters for the 2nd largest trucking company in the U.S. back in the early 1980’s. After they went bankrupt in 1986, the site sat mostly idle for years until a local business purchased it with the intent of creating an exciting and dynamic Waughtown community center! This area is in a Federal Opportunity Zone.
